The Challenge
KCA Deutag wanted to move away from manual and fragmented barrier management processes across its MODU operations. Technical barriers were already followed through maintenance systems, but organisational and operational barriers, such as competence, drills, training, medical status, and operational readiness, relied heavily on manual routines and data collection across multiple systems. This made it difficult to maintain a real-time overview of barrier health and operational risk. Platform managers, HSE personnel, and department leaders needed a simpler and more visual way to understand barrier status, support decision-making, and strengthen compliance related to major accident prevention.
The Solution
To address these challenges, KCA Deutag implemented Presight Barrier Management™ across the Askeladden and Askepott rigs. The solution integrates data from systems including DNV SynergiLife, OCS Competence, drills and training systems, and operational data sources into one unified platform. Through bowtie-based visualisation, automated barrier monitoring,weather-integrated operational guidance, and real-time dashboards, the system provides a dynamic overview of technical, operational, and organisational barriers. The solution is designed to support daily workflows and morning meetings, giving platform managers and offshore teams faster access to critical operational insight.
The Result
The implementation of Presight Barrier Management™ has helped KCA Deutag improve visibility into barrier health, crew competence, and operational readiness while reducing manual follow-up and fragmented processes. The project also increased internal awareness around barrier ownership, responsibilities, and safer operations.
