Integrating  Barrier Management with Digital Control of Work for Safer Operations

Presight Barrier Management and Mobydo Smart Permit, which is a Permit to Work system, are now being connected in a new implementation project for  Shelf Drilling. Mobydo has digitalised the traditional paper-based Control of Work (CoW system). Their new smart digital permit to work software is used daily by offshore crews. Presight Barrier Management gives a live view of barrier status, degraded elements, and the overall risk picture. When these two solutions are linked, users get risk awareness directly inside the PTW system at the exact moment they need it.

This integration supports safer permit to work execution, better planning, and a more transparent risk picture for everyone involved in daily operations.

Instant Access to the Risk Picture

In the recent implementation with Shelf Drilling, opening a permit to work (PtW) or isolating equipment in Mobydo now gives an instant view of relevant barrier elements. Users see the barrier status driven by technical, operational, or organisational barrier elements which have an impact on the overall risk picture. They can also drill down to bowtie analysis with one click and see the underlaying cause of the degraded barrier. This supports fast and accurate decisions within the digital Control of Work software.

Previously Shelf Drilling relied on siloed data, in separate systems, which not only was time consuming, but also making it difficult to see the full risk picture of unwanted conditions and events.

– Barrier status is a prerequisite for planning upcoming work safely. When we see degraded elements early and understand why, we can make better decisions and avoid unnecessary risk, says Svein Flornes HSE Manager at Shelf Drilling.

The solution allows users with one click to drill down and break down performance standards into barrier elements. This allows them to identify what is driving risk and where actions are needed.

Clear Insight into Competence and Safety-Critical Training

Safe work depends on the right competence. The integration links permits to the competence and training requirements needed for the job. Relevant users can verify who is on board, confirm certifications and check safety-critical training status. The system also highlights competence gaps and captures on-the-job training.

This reduces the risk of unsafe execution and supports better competence management by giving insight into organisational elements.

Area-Based Risk Awareness

Embedded Presight dashboards give area-specific views, directly inside Mobydo. Users can see technical, organisational and operational barrier elements for the area and the personnel involved in the execution. This helps crews understand what is happening around them, and the required qualifications for involved personnel.

The result is better transparency, situational awareness and safer prioritisation of work.

Breaking Down Silos Between Systems

The integration removes the need to switch between multiple systems and allows OIM and others working directly with the operations to understand the status of the “unwanted conditions and events ” displayed as a bowtie. The digital Control of Work interface becomes the entry point to live operational data. Svein Flornes emphasises the time saved when the OIM and permit authorities get barrier status, competence insights and risk information inside their normal workflow. Information that traditionally lives in separate maintenance systems such as competence and training in HR system, and CMMS technical equipment and processes, are now visible where work happens directly into the digital Control of Work system

This supports a stronger safety culture and better communication of risk.

Improved Decision-Making and Compliance

The integration supports regulatory requirements related to barriers, including §5 of the Norwegian Management Regulations (Havtil). Maintenance technicians or persons performing work and Responsible persons for the area carrying out an energy isolation or a SIMOPS can easily see which barriers are in place, which are impaired and how this affects risk. This makes it simpler to prioritise tasks, re-sequence work and avoid overlapping risks in the same area.

Bernt Kvam Randeberg, CEO of Mobydo explains that by integrating Presight Barrier Management with Mobydo’s Smart Permit, you shift the focus from maintenance-driven-focus to safety-driven focus.

The system helps shift decisions from maintenance-driven scheduling to risk-based planning.

Greater Efficiency and Reduced Delays

Because risk information follows the permit, users spend less time searching for data. Permit review and approvals are processed faster. Work plans become clearer, with the tool identifying potential conflicts between the planned work and before it commences. This leads to an improved overview of all activities planned for the next work period.

Fewer tasks need re-work due to missing information. The workflow becomes smoother for both offshore and onshore operations. By having the risk perspective in mind when planning out work tasks, operations can reduce downtime, improve decision-making as well as safe work execution.

What This Means for Offshore Crews

The people on the rig feel the biggest impact. They are the ones who prepare review approve and execute permits every day. With the new integration, they get context, clarity and confidence. They see the full risk picture, not just the technical isolation. They understand how competence, barriers, and area conditions affect the job.

This makes work safer, more predictable and easier to plan.

A Step Toward a Stronger Risk Culture

By giving users direct access to risk information, the integration encourages better conversations about safety. People start asking why something is degraded, what it means and how it affects the job. Awareness becomes part of the daily work process. Over time, we will have more data in the system and can in addition to seeing the day-to-day changes in barrier status also see the trends.

This is the foundation of a stronger risk culture.

Svein Flornes highlights the importance of having real-time risk insight directly embedded in daily operations.
